WILLIAM PORTER ESTES 91, of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, died on December 4, 2008 at his home. Rev. Van Lazaroff will conduct services at 11:00 AM, Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home with burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery. A visitation will be at 5:00-7:00 PM, Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Estes was born July 22, 1917 in Paris to Mr. and Mrs. Adam Clark Estes, Sr. He lived in Paris until 1939 when he went to New York City to be a stunt driver for the Jimmie Lynch Death Dodgers at the World’s Fair. Later he worked for Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit, Michigan. He served in the US Air Force during World War II as an Aviation Cadet.
On September 8, 1945, he married Anna Louise Robertson who preceded him in death. In 1947, they moved to Los Angeles where they lived until 1964 when they moved to Palos Verdes Peninsula. Mr. Estes attended Paris Junior College, received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Psychology from the University of Southern California. He worked for 25 years as a school psychologist for the Los Angeles City Schools. From 1965, he was in private practice in Palos Verdes. He was a member of the California State Psychological Association and the Los Angeles County Psychological Association. He retired in 1977.
He was active in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Navy League, serving on the Board for 5 years, the last year, as President in 1981-82. He also belonged to the Bel Air Navy League, Los Angeles-Bombay Sister City Committee, Los Angeles World Affairs Council, Los Paisanos Chamber of Commerce, the Mary and Joseph League and Phi Delta Kappa.
Mr. Estes is survived by 2 nephews, Richard A. Estes of Atlanta and Robert C. Estes of Indianapolis; a niece, Betty Estes of Dallas; great-nieces and nephews; and cousins.
